“There is a lack of data and evidence-based information on the ASGM, and limited integration of economic thinking in policies geared towards improving ASGM. To address this problem, CSF developed a Mining Impacts Calculator for the Brazilian Amazon, which is currently being used by the Brazilian Public Prosecutors Office and the Federal Police. The calculator allows for an instant calculation of damages expressed in monetary values for different ASGM illegal infractions based on information about mining type and context characteristics. The support of Conservation X Labs’ (Artisanal Mining) Grand Challenge will help the Mining Impacts Calculator to reach a larger audience, allowing CSF to replicate the tool to address ASGM challenges in the Ecuadorian Amazon region, providing new information to promote sustainable solutions and policies.”
