Baseline is making it easier to connect to the people and data you need to make ASM sustainable.
We have built a digital marketplace that connects all ASM stakeholders and allows them to safely interact and transact with each other. The marketplace helps ASM miners to purchase, rent or hire the services and products they need. The marketplace not only encourages sustainable mining practices but also allows us to learn from the data that is naturally generated on the platform.

Reason for applying
“I've worked, intermittently, with Africa's ASM sector since I was a teenager; initially as a junior researcher and now as a policy analyst. I'm proud of the work we've done to help governments better understand the sector and raise money for initiatives that make it more sustainable.
I know firsthand that the one huge pain that all initiatives in ASM will have is around data. In particular, how to affordably collect relevant data on the sector and individual mining sites over time.
We started our company (Senca Research) in 2017 to help fill the data gaps that exist in numerous sectors of developing economies.
Baseline is an opportunity to continue to this mission in a sector that will be critical to Africa's developmental trajectory.
The data generated on our platform will provide policymakers, researchers and entrepreneurs insight into the state and inner workings of a country's ASM sector.
