Meet the judges for the final round of the Artisanal Mining Grand Challenge

Our judges are reviewed our 11 finalists’ applications and pitch presentations. They determined the winners of $750,000 in prizes.

Franco Arista Rivera

Coordinador Nacional del Proyecto, planetGOLD

The planetGOLD programme works in nine countries and seeks to make small-scale gold mining safer, cleaner (mercury free) and more profitable. Funded by GEF, led by UNEP, planetGOLD Peru is implemented by the Ministry of Environment in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Mines with the technical assistance of the UNDP.

On planetGOLD Peru, Franco Arista Rivera has been collaborating with the Ministry of Environment in the National Action Plan to reduce or eliminate the emissions and releases of mercury in the ASGM. He is an expert in mining formalization, gender, gold certification, mineral traceability, and ICT application to ASGM.

He will contribute with his experience and knowledge about application of good practices in the artisanal mining in countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.

Georgette B. Sakyi-Addo

President, Association of Women In Mining In Africa

Georgette B. Sakyi-Addo has worked in the mining sector for 25 years across West Africa as a multilingual Administrator, business development & supplies executive, country director and award-winning entrepreneur. She is a founder and manager of small and medium business entities in the mining sector. She was Elected President of the Association of Africa Women In Mining, Founder of Women in Mining (WIM) Ghana, and President of Accra Mining Network. 

Her Interests include local content, economic linkages, gender, inclusion and diversity. She has co-authored four publications in artisanal and was awarded Female Entrepreneur of the Year 2019 (IIA SME AWARDS) and was selected as a Global Inspirational Woman in Mining by WIM UK (2016).

Matthew Chambers

Chair, Chambers Federation

Matthew is an impact investor, social entrepreneur and chair of the Chambers Federation. He has managed the family business for more than 20 years, expanding operations to the Philippines, Kenya & the DRC. The Chambers Federation is an award winning, US-based, accredited impact investment firm. Recipient of the US Secretary of State's Award for Corporate Excellence (ACE), the Federation specializes in women’s economic empowerment, responsible sourcing and value addition in the artisanal cocoa, coffee and gold (ASGM) sectors. 

Matthew led in the formalization of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s chocolate and jewelry sectors by building the first chocolate facility and ASM gold jewelry production line in-country, with value chains made up entirely of women. Matthew is also a board member of Alliance for Responsible Mining.

Nathan Kelly (Senior Associate at CrossBoundary) and Lala Faiz (Director of Strategy and Investment at Conservation X Labs) are collaborating with Matthew to evaluate the final applications.

Aileen Lee

Chief Program Officer, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation

Aileen Lee is the Chief Program Officer leading the Environmental Conservation Program at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, one of the largest private funders of environmental conservation worldwide.

The Moore Foundation distributes nearly over $100 million per year to protect globally important ecosystems through grantmaking reflecting Gordon and Betty Moore’s passions for scientific discovery, innovation, and for preserving the natural world.

Aileen has also served as chair of the board for the Environmental Grantmakers Association, led the Wild Salmon Ecosystems Initiative, helped launch new efforts to address the impact of food production on the environment and serves on the board of the Biodiversity Funders Group.

Aileen is collaborating with her team at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to evaluate the final applications.
